How to build a retaining wall demonstration video

For small retaining walls – (Provided by Anchor Wall Systems)

Equipment Required:

  • Hammer
  • Chisel
  • String
  • Drainage-Aggregate (No-Fines)
  • Carpenter’s Level
  • Gloves
  • Safety Glasses

Steps:

  1. Remove lips from base layer of blocks using a chisel.
  2. Place the first blocks in the trench and verify level using Carpenter’s Level. Use hammer to adjust.
  3. Place second layer in a “Staggered Relation” – Edges of bottom layer blocks to center of next layer blocks. Pull each unit forward until the rear lip is securely in contact with the unit below.
  4. Add back-fill behind each course with drainage aggregate extending 6 inches (152cm) behind the wall.
  5. Continue building wall until desired height is reached.

Please note – Instructions and video demonstration are for education purposes only and are specific to small retaining walls less than 0.5 meters in height.

Large and complex retaining walls need certification by a registered engineer and construction using heavy machinery such as compactors.
